Amnio-PCR is a new rapid method by which major chromosome abnormalities including Down syndrome can be diagnosed following amniocentesis. This provides a definitive result on average within 48 hours of sample receipt.

Laboratory testing uses a small portion of the routine amniocentesis sample to recover fetal DNA which is used to screen for those major chromosome abnormalities which are known to cause birth defect.

Amnio-PCR was pioneered and developed as a clinical assay by Cytogenetic DNA Services Ltd, which is part of the genetics division of The Doctors Laboratory. The test is available to patients worldwide. Samples of amniotic fluid are received in our London laboratory where the rapid diagnosis is undertaken.
